I think it would be very hard to have farmers change their mindset about animals and the way they should treat their livestock.

Good article! I lived in New York at the beginning of this controversy, and for me, the issue is two-fold: Is there any way to preserve life (both human and goose)? And if not, is our "solution" humane?

Considering the intrinsic value of the geese does not distract from considering the humaneness of the way the geese are killed. If the geese need not be killed, then we must stop killing them. If they must be killed, then we must do so as humanely as possible.

I applaud HSUS for keeping the focus on the ability of communities and geese to coexist peacefully. Had HSUS weighed in on the method that officials used to kill the birds, the organization would have been implicitly accepting the assumption that they needed to be killed in the first place --and that's something I don't think anyone has demonstrated, particularly given evidence that these geese were migratory, not resident.

Fab,

My daughter rescued a pitt bull at 8 months old. She gave my 13 year old german sheperd a new bounce to her step. Soon they were best friends, the sheperd being the leader, the pitt a caregiver trained by my daughter to do so, she died a month ago. The pitt was the most comforting, while mourning herself. We would sit for hours as the 70 pound lap dog cuddled with me. I watched a documentary on the M. Vick's dog many of them now therapy dogs. My daughter's pitt makes visits to the hospital here I work. I wish I could be all that my dogs think I am.

Your drawings are inspirational!

Dear Sentinent;
Really thanks, for give us another perspective about this issue. We live, sharing and sourranding with all diferents species, and our treatment or behavior with each of them today, show us how rigth culd the way be or was, in the future.
I hope no change will be late and no sleep to be aware.

We are mammals and do not forget that this land was built to be enjoyed responsibly..

Treating animals, livestock or otherwise, as commodities is indeed unethical, if not criminal, in the eyes of those of us who consider all creatures as fellow creatures. Not only do they deserve humane treatment from us humans but we owe gratitude to those animals who provide us with provisions (livestock) and love and attachment (pets). Thank you for a very clear-sighted discussion.

I will be voting no on Issue 2.

The campaign is hitting the urban folks with the "Safe Food" rant playing on their fears while providing a "PETA is going to take your animals and your way of life" for those outside the big cities.

If this passes, what we are stuck with is a board of POLITICALLY (make no mistake there) appointed members making calls about how people run their farms.

This is big government. No different than anything else. We don't need more of it. I understand the need to protect farmers, but this constitutional amendment is not the answer.
